Visceral Manipulation
Visceral Manipulation Books
Product Description
Osteopathy and other systems of manual medicine have developed a variety of models for understanding the mechanics of proper and improper motion of the musculoskeletal system. In this vital and revolutionary work, that same structural thought is applied to the visceral system. The central premise of Visceral Manipulation is that the interrelationship of structure and function among the internal organs is at least as strong as that among the constituents of the musculoskeletal system; and that, like the musculoskeletal system, manipulation of the viscera can be beneficially used in the treatment of a wide variety of problems affecting any of the body’s systems. In this revised edition, over a hundred-and-thirty new illustrations and photographs, many of them in two colors, graphically depict the thoughts in the text. Minor updates have also been made to the original text.

I might be a minority, here, but I’m really a massage therapist who has had the opportunity to use the techniques in Dr. Barral’s books. I don’t have to opportunity to use the techniques near as much as an MD, ND, or Osteopath would, but every once in a even as someone will come in with a problem that is perfect for me to try this for. Please note that many of these techniques are extremely subtle and gentle, like Cranio-sacral therapies. The more direct manipulations are perfect for a therapist to incorporate into nearly any kind of session: for instance liver, stomach, or colon manipulations can quickly and easily be thrown into any relaxation or therapeutic massage.
To say that the techniques work would be an understatement. Even me, as a massage therapist, have had excellent consequences, and at times surprising consequences using these techniques. I’ve had particular luck with the liver manipulations. One lady had some kind of lead poisoning (according to the docs) and said it hurt her nervous system and she would have to live with it the rest of her life. She experienced severe headaches, aptly shoulder pain, nausea, dizziness, during every menstrual cycle and it was so terrible she really considered suicide. She’d had this for about ten years by the time I met her and this sounded like a classic liver come forth, so when I offered to try this she was more than ready.
In THREE sessions, her symptoms decreased a staggering 70%!! Also, please note that I didn’t even do the more invasive seated techniques to release all the supporting ligaments. I ONLY did the costal techniques where you work through the ribs, and did induction at the end.
I went away so I couldn’t continue treatment, but the client informed me that she followed up with a liver cleanse which got rid of the remainder of her symptoms. THIS is what hands on healing is all about. Incredible stuff.

had this book for awhile, never really went through it until my CHEK Level 3 course. just recently completed a 2-day Visceral-somatic link workshop by the Barral Institute and now I can apply the skills I learned and use this book as my reference guide. Fantastic for those who are in the massage industry.

I read it before taking Barral’s VM1 as required reading, but it didn’t really “click” until AFTER the class.
So, EXCELLENT book, GREAT in rank… but I wouldn’t urge it to anyone who hasn’t taken Visceral Manipulation, or doesn’t plot to. There’s really no way to get the feel of this work by reading the book and looking at the pictures by themselves.

This already brilliant text has been significantly updated with more direct explanations, greatly improved illustrations, and a more complete, better organized text. All this makes much greater specific clinical applicability. Even if you own the first edition, this is a book well worth your even as to buy again!

This text is a must have, must read for any clinician involved in the area of pelvic floor disorders including pain and incontinence. Simple to know with excellent diagrams/photos to help learn techniques. A prerequesite to Visceral Manipulation II or Urogenital Manipulation. A matter-of-fact text to have handy in any clinical setting.
