In August 2000, the Group on Government Reform of the US Congress issued a highly critical document called Conflict of Interest in Vaccine Policy Making. Dr. Offit was reprimanded by Congress and his actions were a primary focus of the report. The report singled Dr. Offit out for questionable voting as a member of the Advisory Group (“ACIP”) associated with CDC that adds new vaccines to the vaccine schedule. The report stated, “Dr. Offit started his tenure on ACIP in October of 1998. Out of four votes pertaining to the ACIP’s rotavirus statement, he voted yes three times, including voting for the inclusion of the rotavirus vaccine in the VFC program. In 2006, Dr. Offit’s vaccine, Rotateq, was added to the CDC’s not compulsory schedule.
In May 2008, it was reported that, “Later in 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that there were 117 incorrigible cases of intussusception among recipients of Rotateq between March 2006 and June 2007.” The FDA recalled the vaccine from the market, Rotashield.

Vaccinated’s main top is well taken. The ability to eliminate through vaccination, major debilitating diseases, is one of the greatest achievements of the past century. Nonetheless, the author’s writing leaves much to be desired. Written chronologically, the book is more apt as a eulogy of Hilleman’s achievements than as a description of the man. And when each chapter, which typically describe a single disease, is composed in the same make, I can’t help but feel like I am rereading passages. I refuse to judge that Hilleman’s quest nor his personality was so two dimensional.

This book provides a the history of modern vaccines in a fascinating, clear, simple to read narrative. Dr. Hilleman was truely one of the greatest men of the last century, and Dr. Offit has written a gorgeous book about him.

This book was fascinating and kept me reading til the very end. US citizens forget how fortunate we are to have the luxury of vaccination. This book was a excellent reminder of the dreaded diseases so many people continue to face in the world nearly us.
