This book has observably been of tremendous help to many readers, but I found myself apt more confused about Organic Chemistry than when I ongoing reading. I felt overwhelmed by a fantastic deal of in rank that didn’t seem to tie back to the Org class I’m now taking. Perhaps my learning style is just different from others who posted. Or maybe this is a book that should be read over the summer ahead of the school year, when there’s bounty of time to reread sections that the student doesn’t know on the first pass.
With a full-blown headache, I’m packing this book up and returning it.
The only reason that I didn’t go with one star is that Dr. Karty writes well, which is everlastingly appreciated.

Conventional organic chemistry texts involve a honest quantity of memorisation. You may possibly fill a wall chart with the reaction mechanisms given in some texts. But Karty takes a different view in this small book. He focuses on the main concepts in organic chemistry, and eschews mass memorisation. This will undoubtedly comfort some readers who do poorly at the latter.
It might even work. These days, any practising chemist would surely have simple, immediate access to any number of reference texts with the reaction diagrams. Really, this has been right for decades. So perhaps Karty’s emphasis may be a simpler pedagogy.

This book is perfect for those frightened college freshmen who are worried to take organic chemistry. The author is undemanding and concise. He is also very understanding, and his goal is to cool the reader’s fears about organic chemistry. I’m only in my first week taking organic chemistry, but so far, I feel that the book has helped to ease my anxieties about the course and has made me feel more confident about my ability to do well in the course. I urge this to anyone who might be taking organic chemistry in college!

This book was just so what I needed to do well in Organic Chemistry. It clearly clarifies the concepts that you need to know in order to do well in O Chem. I would urge reading it a few weeks before you start Organic Chem 1 and then go back and review it just before beginning class. It might even be helpful to read it towards the end of Inorganic Chem. since it clarifies some concepts of Inorganic better than many text books. I may possibly have improved my ACS final exam by about 5% if I had read this book before that test.
If you are hoping for help in O Chem 2 it will not be as helpful unless if your problem was not understanding the concepts of O Chem 1 or Inorganic Chem.
I took my O Chem 1&2 at an intensive 8 week program and after studying this book the only real challenges I had was with organic synthesis. Many of my classmates struggled a lot more than me and I credit this book with making the difference for me.

This book is a excellent starting top for organic chemistry. It will give you the aptly way of organic thought. But,it is not excellent for exams. You should have it and read it before you orgo class.
