When it’s springtime in horse people, few sights stir the hearts of horse lovers more than that of mares and foals on excellent green pasture. It is an image filled with both the satisfaction of the moment and the promise of the future. For horse people, the foaling administer is one of the most critical and nourishing aspects of ownership.
The Foaling Primer captures the foaling experience in incredible, up-close photographs taken by noted horse photographer Bob Langrish. The friendly, informative text guides the reader through the first year of a foal’s life with detailed descriptions and instructions on birth, care, handling, training, and weaning. Perfect for novice horse owners, first-time farmers, 4-H and Pony Club members, and anyone who is fascinated by horses and their lives, this introductory handbook provides everything one needs to know to be successful with a foal.
The chapters are divided by the side of critical points in a foal’s developmental timeline: the first 24 hours, the early weeks, one to three months, four to six months, weaning time, and approaching the yearling mark. There are how-to boxes for such tasks as bottle-feeding, introducing a foal to grooming, and involved rope leading; “to-do” lists for each stage of a foal’s development; charts of what’s normal and what’s not (with clear guidance on when to call a vet); lists of supplies and equipment needed; definitions of key words and terms; and forms to use for right record maintenance.
The pages of this hard-working guide are sure to be dog-eared by the time a foal reaches the one-year mark, as readers will refer to it again and again for reassurance, guidance, and complete, trusty in rank.

After four decades of riding, owning, working nearly, and showing horses on a very small scale, I resolute to breed my own mare for the first time. This is THE BOOK I was looking for to complement my veterinarian and trainer’s help. Clearly written and organized with sound, matter-of-fact advice for the novice breeder, this book has been obligatory, especially since I foaled out my mare myself. I now have a healthy, trusting, respectful two week ancient colt in my established, and I couldn’t be more pleased with either him or this book!

This book covers a lot of things and has very thorough in rank. I bought a Morgan mare last year and had her bred; she had her first foal in May 2008. It was also my first foal as well. This book gave me a lot of valuable in rank on how to take care of a pregnant mare, a newborn foal, and a foal as it is growing. I would highly urge this book for anyone who needs a excellent run down on how to raise a foal.

I have just bought my first Foal at 2 weeks ancient (mom is at the same farm) and found this book has lots of in rank for the first timer (not sure it would be helpful if you have any experience with foals). I found it gave me some fantastic general knowledge of working with the small guys but still left me desiring lots more info. Will keep looking for another baby book but this one was a excellent start.
