Product Description
Picking up where Berton Roueché’s The Medical Detectives left off, The Deadly Dinner Party presents fifteen edge-of-your-seat, real-life medical detective tales written by a involved physician. Award-winning author Jonathan Edlow, M.D., shows the doctor as detective and the epidemiologist as elite sleuth in tales that are as gripping as the best thrillers.
In these tales a notorious stomach bug turns a suburban dinner party into a disaster that nearly claims its host; a diminutive woman routinely eats more than her football-playing boyfriend but continually loses consequence; a young executive is diagnosed with lung cancer, yet the tumors seem to wax and wane inexplicably. Written for the lay person who wishes to better grasp how doctors decipher the myriad clues and puzzling symptoms they often encounter, each tale presents a very different case where doctors must work to find the right diagnosis before it is too late. Edlow uses his unique ability to relate complex medical concepts in a writing style that is clear, engaging and easily understandable. The resulting tales both entertain us and teach us much about medicine, its history and the subtle interactions among pathogens, humans, and the environment.

Out of necessity I became an armchair diagnostician and crier regarding the dangers and importance of things microscopic and our abuse of antibiotics. I developed a taste for medical in rank, particularly tales regarding diagnosing disease. If you like mysteries and medicine, this book is for you. I wouldn’t call it a page turner but it is what it is, a book of small tales regarding medical mysteries – nothing too exotic but it contained a lot I didn’t know and will certainly keep in the back of my mind. In the medical mystery genre (though focused on a single theme), I HIGHLY urge The Family That Couldn’t Sleep.

If you like the sort of articles that Berton Roueché used to publish in the New Yorker and collected in books like Medical Detectives then you’ll be sure to delight in this. This is pretty much an homage to the master but fascinating nonetheless.

About: Collection of medical vignettes about folks with tough health problems.
Pros: Fascinating tales. Sources listed in the back.
Cons: Sources not cited in-text. I lost interest toward the end. I guess there only so many medical tales you can read at a time.

I was given this book as a holiday gift and ongoing reading it the first night I got it…I was up most of the night as each tale was riveting, mysterious and as a bonus, deeply educational. I kept saying to myself “I’ll just read one more” before going to sleep…well, nearly halfway through thre entire book, I finally passed to the night. I couldn’t wait to get back to it and finished the book the next day. I keep it on my bookshelf and will undoubtedly go back to the tales often. I highly urge this intelligent, fascnating handle.

Like any excellent detective tale, each case study in “The Deadly Dinner Party” presents the mystery, offers clues (including red herrings) and eventually reveals the often surprising solution. By the side of the way, there are fascinating and delightful forays into science, history, psychology, well loved culture, and business. The writing is intelligent without being too technical or overly dramatic, resulting in a painstakingly enjoyable and educational book.
