A Howell Dog Book of DistinctionAmazon.com Review
There’s the Scottish Terrier (“an earth dog used in hunting the fox and the brocke”), the Boston Terrier (“a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, small-headed, compactly built, small- tailed, well balanced dog”), or the Fantastic Dane (“one of the most elegant and distinguished varieties of giant-type dog”). In fact, there are 146 AKC-recognized breeds profiled within the pages of the Complete Dog Book, and the pictures and text provide fantastic bowser browsing. The breed descriptions help you choose among the hounds, terriers, toys, and working breeds, the herders, guard dogs, and sporting breeds. Measurements help determine which dogs will best fit your abode (Chesapeake Bay Retrievers measure 21 to 26 inches high at the shoulder, Chinese Cresteds are a mere 11 to 13 inches off the ground, even as the Irish Wolfhound stands 30 to 32 inches tall), breed temperaments help you choose your ideal pet, and show criteria help you know what you’re looking for when you really start to shop for a pup. In the meantime, there are fascinating tales about breed origins, and a helpful glossary of dog terms, even as the chapters on grooming, training, and Canine Health and First Aid will come in handy once you’ve brought your new dog home. –Stephanie Gold

Brilliant book. You can find most of this in rank on their web site, but it’s fantastic to take to a dog show when you have questions about other breeds. Wonderful book. I everlastingly reference it.

If you like purebred dogs, this perennial AKC publication details over the breed standards for over 150 breeds in the seven groups: Hound, Sporting, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding.
Although the descriptions of show standards are complete, the book doesn’t really go into temperament and fit for your family or lifestyle. The book is not really for the novice purebred owner, but rather someone who has an interest in showing as a sport or in breed standards.

Recently I bought the 20th edition of the Complete Dog Book for my sister’s birthday and was very disappointed with the black and white photographs. We have an edition in our family similar to this one, but it is dated back when color photos were not used frequently. Why would they choose not to show the gorgeous colors of the breeds – not a excellent choice. I am considering returning this book for the earlier edition even though some of the newer breeds aren’t listed.
