Product Description
In the late 1990s, treatment-correlated deaths or ?complications” were the fifth leading cause of death for Americans. Spurred by the crisis, a group of dedicated physicians like Paul Batalden and Don Berwick made it their goal to study the concepts of ?quality improvement” used at Toyota and NASA, and to apply them to the do of medicine. This book tells their tale, and how these ?heretical” thoughts have blossomed into a movement, bringing the focus back to where it should have everlastingly been: the patient.

A fantastic historical review of the quality movement and leaders within healthcare who have been successful as leaders in the quality movement. Informative and well written, quick read.

Charles Kenney’s book is insightful and is written to be read easily. The tale of today’s quality movement in healthcare, from its inception in the “Breakfast Club” to the major national symposia now presented by that Club’s successor, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) is both enlightening and inspiring. A most valuable addition to my library.

I reckon Mr Kenney offers an honest and to some extent optimistic take on the health care challenges facing our people. There are certain hurdles to overcome, but the modeling of “best practices” and the new reliance on technology-driven solutions offers some room for optimism.

There is some very fascinating in rank in there, things I really had no thought were happening (like studying Toyota to reduce medical errors). Considering I work on the other side of things, really seeing patients, I feel like this work hits some vital points, but perhaps not the most pressing and direct issues that impair providers from providing brilliant care every time.
