“Surrounded by Higher Education” details many of the problems: Complaints and the nonresponse from APA are given by “Surrounded by Education” at:

In the introduction to the latest version of the APA style manual, one learns that it is not calculated for readers, but for those who “consume content.”
This iteration of a once helpful and authoritative publication does not qualify as an “edition.” It’s not helpful to copy editors or people who write. You know. People who *read.* One is referred to a Web site calculated for illerates, that runs automatic annoying audio files, for the nonreaders they guess to use style for written communication. It’s a looking-glass world. The Web site does not even have a “search” means.
The print work, which would greatly benefit from guidelines on how to prepared indexes for both journals and books following APA, is abbreviated to the top of being barely helpful. The brilliant indexes of previous editions is now barely more than an alphabetized table of contents.
Copyeditors will be aghast. It has everlastingly been helpful to cite an APA page number. The material is either gone or “maybe” on the Web site for an indefinite time. Having a thorough, definitive style is crucial to consistency. Oh, well. Just another outdated concept.
No wonder print publishing is close to dead: Publishers don’t even judge in reading.
AMA style has much better word usage guidelines. Chicago is equivocal, but intelligent.
Other than for the actual publications of the American Psychological Association, this format should be dropped. Let them deal with the illiterate consequences from the “content consumers” who don’t have a clue about writing and/or English.

Well, as the title says, it is what it is; 6th edition…professors said I need it so I got it…idk how you write a review on something you need…it would be nice if they had a search function…maybe a electronic version or something…neway, I will be reading it this semster

Condensed isn’t king, but still very helpful and more matter-of-fact for those students on a flat budget. The page part in this volume (6th) is near cut in half and, for me, I’d prefer the lengthier version since it is more a reference book than anything. The plus-side, but, is that fewer pages = cheaper price. The terrible thing is less isn’t everlastingly more. Yes – the publisher will sell more copies because it is more affordable. But guidelines for writing an academic paper, depending upon who the professor/school is – never is a sure thing. There are way many more books out there like this one for twice and half the price. The problem is that each book like this, whether it is APA, Blair, other manuals, etc. offers different instruction and there is no clear consensus… the only thing certain is that the newer version will render the older version obsolete, so buying the book USED is harder to come by like many instructional/university books. It’s a racket if you question me!

I prefer The Chicago Manual of Style over the APA version, particularly this new edition. Even the older editions were not as rich and encyclopedic. For those who like the light reading, one should know this is not a book calculated to read cover to cover. A reference book should not be overly curtailed in volume. If a dictionary contains only the most helpful words, then it becomes a vocabulary book. This book is a best seller not for its academic value, but rather it’s accessiveness to the mass consumers who are not (and should not be) maticulous bookworms. Maybe I should place it in this way: This is a book helpful for people like to write, but not for right professional writers.
