There’s a reason that although this book was written in 1995, there have been no more recent editions. It would be way too much work for Dr. Polk to remove the constant barrage of sexism to make a future edition sellable in this day and age. Maybe this was the definitive guide for success in medicine in 1995, but I’m sure glad times have changed. Any current or entering medical student today would be shocked.
I don’t want to condone giving this book any more sales, but it is a moderately helpful book for the medical student. It certainly is the most unique book on medical studies that I’ve read. With no hint of idealism it gives the veteran doctor’s surrounded by perspective to what really counts in medicine–lifestyle, money, and prestige. An fascinating perspective when most of the other books I’ve read on the medical student experience say the same things over and over. This book definately gives a unique and probably helpful view on what is to come.

A biting, often cynical, view on medicine by the side of with career advice. Can be limited in its analysis due to author’s bias. But a very helpful book for medical students and residents because of its sharp observations and coverage.

This is such an incredible book that I nearly don’t want to let anyone else know about it! Dr. Polk presents the do of medicine today in a realistic and humorous light, even as offering tons of helpful advice and his own honest opinions. Don’t reckon… buy it. Thanks Dr. Polk!

As someone who has gone through medical training, I can say that every shrewd pre-med and med student should obsess this book. It is filled with in rank about how the business and do of medicine REALLY work in the U.S. You won’t hear your med school professors talking about this…at least, not nearly students.
This book might cause the shrewd pre-med student to choose another career. So be it. It will also help him/her choose the aptly path within medicine, should he/she choose to stay. One of the most helpful books I have EVER read in my life.

An eye-opening look at medicine beyond the ivory tower that most med students are familiar with. You may or may not agree with the author’s cynicism but it is warranted in today’s healthcare environment. Reckon of it as an unabridged version of “The House of God” as it deals with medical life before and after residency.
