As a physician’s spouse, I found this book very timely even though it was written more than 10 years ago. Every physician and their spouse should read this book, especially those in the 38-45 year ancient age group. The authors describe what drives a physician, what happens when reality does not meet their expecations, and how it impacts their spouse, children and their private lives. I hope Dr. Menninger releases a new edition of this book soon!

Medical Marriages explores the psychology of people who choose to become doctors and the ways that their personality traits color their marriages. Most of the book assuemes a doctor spouse and a less professionally ambitious wife, but some space is devoted to marriages between two doctors and ones in which the wife is the doctor. The authors often make the dated assumption that the doctor has the more demanding, more prestigious, and more lucrative job in the marriage. This is often not right, especially where the doctor is a woman. My fiancee and I found the book to be a usefull starting top for discussions about medicine, our personalities, the impact of our personalities on each other, and ways we can interact better with each other. But, the usefull parts must be sifted out and taken in the context of today’s changing expectations for medicine and for marriage.
