The author fails to recognize the relation of leaders to the structure of society (persons, families and bureaucracies) as well as all the general roles played within families (chief, manager, entrepreneur and apprentice). Leaders by the side of with members of their families play all these roles with unreliable degrees of responsibility. Even as he does recognize that leaders exercise power, he goes on to highlite coercion which is only one and the least used of three tools of power and fails to identify the foundation of power. Finally his subtopics lack
judgment and his case studies are exercises in management and not leadership. This introduction to leadership has a very limited scope without an apparent judgment.

This is a excellent read and discusses many valuable thoughts. That being said, theory and do are seldom one in the same. Even as understanding theory may help frame your tactical approach to do, in and of itself, theory does not translate directly into do. In my book Leadership Matters…The CEO Survival Manual: WHAT IT TAKES TO REACH THE C-SUITE AND STAY THERE I focus much more on do than theory. In fact, I spend a clad quantity of time debunking conventional theory with matter-of-fact real world tips for leaders. I would urge Peter’s book for those looking for an introduction to leadership principles on a theoretical basis. But, for those looking for strong actionable advice they may be left wanting more…
