Intuitive Biostatistics: A Nonmathematical Guide to Statistical Thinking
Intuitive Biostatistics: A Nonmathematical Guide to Statistical Thought Books
Product Description
Painstakingly revised and updated, the second edition of Intuitive Biostatistics retains and refines the core perspectives of the previous edition: a focus on how to interpret statistical consequences rather than on how to question data, minimal use of equations, and a detailed review of assumptions and common mistakes. Intuitive Biostatistics, Absolutely Revised Second Edition, provides a clear introduction to statistics for undergraduate and graduate students and also serves as a statistics refresher for working scientists.
NEW TO THIS EDITION:
* Chapter 1 shows how our intuitions lead us to misinterpret data, thus explaining the need for statistical rigor.
* Chapter 11 clarifies the lognormal distribution, an essential topic omitted from many other statistics books.
* Chapter 21 contrasts testing for likeness with testing for differences.
* Chapters 22, 23, and 40 explore the pervasive problem of multiple comparisons.
* Chapters 24 and 25 review testing for normality and outliers.
* Chapter 35 shows how statistical hypothesis testing can be understood as comparing the fits of alternative models.
* Chapters 37 and 38 provide a brief introduction to multiple, logistic, and proportional hazards regression.
* Chapter 46 reviews one example in fantastic depth, reviewing numerous statistical concepts and identifying common mistakes.
* Chapter 47 includes 49 multi-part problems, with answers fully discussed in Chapter 48.
* New “Q and A” sections throughout the book review key concepts.

I never received my order, and when I emailed the vendor, they informed me that it had been shipped. When I questioned for a refund, since it had been more than 2 weeks, they told me that company policy prevents them from issuing a refund until after 30 days. After 30 days, I contacted the vendor again to say them that I had STILL not received my order and I sought after a refund. I have yet to hear back from them. I highly urge staying away from this vendor.

This is a must for every medical student. For those engaging in research there is sufficient detail to be able to apply the right statistical technique and to interpret the consequences. For the rest it gives a very clear introduction to biostatistics and particularly aids understanding of research articles without which a doctor will quickly lose touch with evidence based medicine.
For the scientist and science student I would urge this as an adjunct to any statistical course and as a reference to have on hand when reading those articles. I regularly picked up the first edition to check I was understanding something correctly – this edition is an order of magnitude better.

This book fills a gap in the market of books for statistics. The book focuses on the application of statistical procedures, rather than the mathematics of the various tests. The book is written in a non-complicated, chatty way and is filled with fascinating examples. The author is able to make a potentially complicated topic, simple to know and logical. This book is a must for any postgraduate student/professional scientist who uses statistics.
