Find out:
- Why self-motivated and successful people are prone to TMS
- How anxiety and repressed rage trigger muscle spasms
- How people “train themselves’ to experience back pain
- How you may get relief from back pain within two to six weeks by recognizing TMS and its causes
Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain–Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)–and isn’t really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plot (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don’t work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs–and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind’s effort to repress emotions. He’s not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he’s saying that the battle going on in your mind consequences in a real corporal disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the quantity or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in (“and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the administer is not enough”), the trick doesn’t work any more, and there’s no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Everlastingly consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) –Joan Price

I judge the other reviewers are honestly inaccurate in their assessment this book is and may possibly be beneficial to anyone with real pain cause by aging bodies, injury or sorts. I am everlastingly amazed how many people out there are cool aid people (GUANA). I mean any disrespect but I don’t respect the majority of opinions (Pro book review) for evident reason especially since the cant clarify the reasoning for the pain relief besides to name it TMJ.
I wish all pain weary in rank seeker the best of luck but I judge it take more than this books approach.

every ailment is part corporal, mental, and chemical- in differing proportions for each person. dr sarno carefully “screens” his patients.clearly they are those who have a larger mental/emotional component.i have first hand experience of meeting one of dr sarno’s patient for whom his program was unsuccessful.after treating his injured disc, he is now pain free.sarnos explanations for why back pain can not be from the common corporal diagnoses is full of mistakes.his understanding of neurology appears limited.if you would like some real answers try to get your hands on stuart mcgill’s low back disorders,evidence-based prevention and remedy.when you are through please send your copy to dr. sarno. if he truely cares, he’ll read it.

I reckon when doctors tell me it’s all in my mind suffering from chroinic back pain-I felt hopless then picking up this book made me reckon there was a connection to the mind and pain- I felt the author spent most of thier time trying to tell me it’s all in my head and there was no phyical problems? My MRI showed otherwise!

Save your time and money. Serious back-pain is ordinarily not cause entirely by the mind. Take **lots** of rest (nothing more serious than walking) and you’ll heal. I read the book and kept coming up for some gems of wisdom which never came.
