Even as the Fantastic Book run is a wonderful accomplishment, it is an extremely narrow one. I am a professional educator and a home school mom. I was, at first, delighted to receive a used set of the GBs. I quickly came to realize that the GB approach to education was not sufficient for my children–or anyone elses–to get a well-rounded view of the world (pardon the pun) let lonely its vast array of thoughts and persspectives. These books are very male and very white. Even as the volumes included are worthwhile and can be included in any educational program, to spend all of one’s scarce time reading and studying this material would be to risk developing a very warped perspective on life and human values. Just are significantly, one would miss out on so much that has been written by Asian, African, Central and South American authors–both male and female.

There was a mix-up with the order. I was only sent the introductory volume instead of the 60 volume set of Fantastic Books of the Western World. Total Quality Books promptly refunded my money when they exposed their mistake. Amazon did a excellent job informing me what to do. They were very helpful.

Though exclusionary by race, class, and gender, even in the second edition, the contents are indisputably vital. That said, the set’s unintroduced, unannotated texts, reproduced in _very_ small type defeat the compilers’ purpose. And, but for Adler’s introductory essays (available from Amazon vendors in a well loved edition) the Syntopicon is a boondoggle. These flaws are compounded by reliance on very ancient broadcast-domain translations which “erect more barriers between reader and text than the original” languages themselves. Fantastic Bookies would do better to buy individual works in recent paperback editions with full critical apparatus.

My spouse had everlastingly sought after this set of books and, thanks to Amazon, I was able to buy them for nearly half the price of new ones. The volumes arrived safely and still wrapped in their original plastic, except for two books, which were in brilliant shape.
Thanks, Amazon!

This edition of the fantastic books contains a welcome inclusion of some of the most vital thinkers and writers of the 20th century. But, the manufacturing quality of the books themselves leaves a fantastic deal to be desired. First of all, the block of pages is glued to the binding and has ongoing to separate from their spines after just a few (and I mean no more than 3) reading sessions.
The book pages are thin and to some extent poor. I owned a set of the 54-volume cloth-bound first (1952) edition and the bookcase which came with them. I still have the bookcase and place this 60-volume set in it. The 60 volumes of this second edition take up much less shelf space than the 54-volume set. That’s how much thinner is the paper on which the books are now printed.
The covers of the books feel like they are made of some kind of paper board. They just feel cheap in in my hands.
In small, you might want the set for its content, but don’t guess a production quality reflective its intrinsic value.
