I found the book honestly right, but compared with Alvan Feinstein’s Principles of Medical Statistics, it overly simplified many tests. The section on use of Yates correction for Chi Square tests is an example. It quotes Cochran’s book from the 1950s, but ignores more recent analysis of the issues. The section on Fisher Exact test states categorically that this cannot be used for anything other than 2×2 tables, but Fisher extended his test with the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Test for larger tables. With the increased use of computer simulations and Monte Carlo methods, it would have been helpful to discuss this type of analysis. I also found that it was not particularly well organized in differentiating analysis of nominal and ordinal data. But, it covers the basic tests well and is right in promoting confidence intervals over simple p-value significance testing. One area that stands out in this book compared to similar other books was suggestions for transformations of data for skewed data.

This is an brilliant reference. Nearly all of the methods used in published clinical trials are discussed. The presentation is clear with sufficient detail to enable the reader implement the methods described. Worked examples are clear and to the top. Appendix tables that group analysis methods according to their use are very helpful. Charles Mayo, Ph.D.

This is simply a fantastic stats book. It takes complex models such as logistic regression and multivariate analysis and clarifies them in real life simple examples. I feel that I finally have a grasp on medical statistics and how and when to use these test.
