Epidemiologic Methods: Studying the Occurrence of Illness
Epidemiologic Methods: Studying the Occurrence of Illness Books
Product Description
This is a rigorous, systematic introduction to the basic concepts and matter-of-fact tools of epidemiologic research. It is aimed at readers who will be conducting epidemiologic studies themselves or who need a firm grasp of epidemiologic principles in order to interpret and evaluate studies conducted by others. Besides offering clear descriptions of key concepts, the book is rich with examples illustrating how these concepts are applied. Some examples are drawn from classic studies in the field–the work of Snow, Semmelweis, Goldberger, Doll and Hill, and others–even as many others concern modern-day epidemiologic studies of problems of current broadcast health importance. Nearly every chapter includes a set of exercises (with answers) to help students gain do in applying new thoughts and techniques. The book’s chapters are organized nearly three main themes: general concepts and methods of epidemiology; major study designs; and evaluating policies and programs. Collectively, these topics form the core material for a graduate-level course or course sequence in epidemiologic methods. Both authors are experienced epidemiologic researchers and have won multiple awards for effective teaching.

This book was included as required reading for my graduate level epidemiology course. I borrowed the book from a supporter as a reference during the course but it is so brilliant that I now am purchasing it to have. The targeted chapters on case-control studies, RCTs, cohort studies and ecologic studies are all brilliant. The examples drive home the points as do the questions at the end of the chapter. A must have for a budding epidemiologist or outcomes researcher.

This book covers epidemiology beyond the basics. It is at a graduate course level in epidemiology. The book is simple to read for the most part. A general knowledge of biostatistics is helpful. The numerous examples make the concepts simpler to know. There are excercises at the end of every chapter to illustrate the topics further. I urge the book to anyone who is in interested in an in depth look at epidemiologic methods.
