Product Description
Unlike approaches that focus on changing specific behavior, Greenspan’s program promotes the building blocks of healthy emotional and behavioral development. He shows that, remarkably, children with ASD do not have a flat, limited potential, and may often join their peers to lead full, psychologically healthy lives. The Floortime approach can also be applied at any age?including early infancy, when the first signs of risk for ASD may appear?so that preventing the full development of autism becomes a real possibility.

I would give more stars, if book didn’t seem to suggest Floortime as a primary means to deal with behavior. For my child, modernnewest ABA are working better for helping my child connect to the world. Floortime seems to help my child during free time and when behavior is not negative; but, as a means to deal with negative, or otherwise “not typically developing” behavior, Floortime doesn’t seem to give my child enough of a opportunity. To me, Floortime-only (without ABA) may work for other children, but not mine. Note: I am a layperson & mother, but would have liked less conjecture in this book, in regards to lack of any empirical evidence for Floortime-only approach being included. Generally speaking, my child seems to answer well to Floortime, but not as a means to deal with behavior, or when my child is upset. Floortime = excellent play time & learning time for my child, but not excellent for when my child is upset (ABA has provided more growth for my child it turns out, in regards to tantrums and negative behaviorreactions to the world).

I was very disappointed in this book. There was very small in rank in the book. It basically just kept repeating the same general concept over and over again. As an educator of elementary age ASD students, I was hoping to expand upon the TEACCH and ABA approaches that I have been employing. But, I found very small in rank that was helpful. I have read literally hundreds of books about autism and correlated disorders, including many first hand accounts. The authors of this book did not seem to exhibit a firm understanding of autism spectrum conditions.

When I bought this book, I was expecting helpful solutions, but all I got were general facts that most parents of autistic children already know. The book certainly needed more specific in rank on how to handle problems.
