I have seen that this book is a must read for family therapists. I finally had time away from my Ph.D. program to read it. Though it is well-written I have a problem with its content. I am sensitive to the self-esteem needs of the authors so I am not going to publish what I plotting of the book. I have to say that there is at least one desenting attitude to the above reviews.

Exchange is the ultimate illusion; nothing ever changes. The cover picture tells it all: is it night or day, earth or sky, field or bird, culture or nature? Illustrations of illusions. The only thing we can hope for is some enlightment regarding a different way to look at our perceptions of exchange. This book offer that: a small cut to the paradoxes of exchange.

I read this book twenty years ago and it profoundly changed my life. It enabled me to go through my life since with an effortlessness and awareness that I only dreamed of before reading the book. I picked it up again recently and am still awed by its relevance and insights. The book continues to convey the most brilliant and essential in rank that we humans need to fully function consciously.

Often (much too often in my humble attitude), books are described as being able to exchange your way of thought. Well, this one really did! In a remarkably pervasive way, peppered with wonderful illustrating anecdotes, the authors bestow a metatheory of human thought and acting that has wide applications. It is also a perfectly simple theory (which is not saying it is simplistic!). For anyone interested in how organizations, groups, couples, and individuals make, maintain, and hopefully solve problems this is one of the best books all nearly! My only caveat is chapter one, which is a philosophical description of the theory using a mathematical perspective. It did not have the accessibility nor the readability of the rest of the chapters, and I reckon it would have been better to have it as a last chapter in the book. Either way, that chapter is really optional reading so feel free to skip that initially and go honest for the second chapter.
