Real life cases for the psychiatry clerkship and shelf-exam
4 STAR DOODY’S REVIEW!
“During medical school, I used similar case review books for various clerkships, including psychiatry. This one stands out because the cases are representative of psychiatry, the explanations are complete yet concise, and the text uses bolded words, tables, and definitions of key terms to help readers know the essential concepts rather than simply memorizing more data that is likely to be forgotten. The questions are very representative of the type of questions on the shelf-exams and USMLE Step 2, with apt descriptions of the right answers. The first two sections are ideal for students just beginning their clerkship, as they set the groundwork for the basis of psychiatry.”–Doody’s Review Service

Very excellent book. I can urge it to everybody who has to do with psychiatry in clinical do, school,… The book is a excellent companion in training in diagnostical matters.

It’s a excellent book that is just as excellent as any other case files, and I loved reading it. It really highlights vital cases by giving clinical vignettes and them explaining the diagnosis. It also includes questions after each vignette that helps you remember key points about a disease. I was satisfied that this book did an brilliant job going over psych, but by the time that I was finished reading it, I felt like it didn’t add as much to my education as I sought after. I went through First Aid clerkship book for psych before going over this book, and the FA book was more than enough. This book was really just icing on the cake once you already have the basic in rank memorized. I read it in a link of days, which leads me to judge that it is best used as a quick review before a test rather than as a primary source. Though I reckon you might be able to use it for either if you sought after.

I bought the PDA version of this book (I’m so grateful to fit it into my pocket, by the side of with my other 5 pda texts). This book is incredible, it not only engages the learner in active critical thought(as different to passive reading), it gives a very thorough presentation of each of the 60 topics it covers, with pearls and fine points to differentiate the subtle aspects of history, presentation, etc. for correlated diagnoses. This book pulls the learner into it, 1 case at a time, until you nearly feel as though you interacted with a patient. I like this style, and the depth of in rank.
Read the first 2 chapters on clinical thought style, and the clinical mindset algorythm. Incredible.

When preparing for the vignette part of oral psychiatry boards, I found this book very helpful for quick review and resolution template creation. It is very accessibly written and the lack of simple-to-read study materials for the vignette part of the exam makes it a very helpful adjunct and is a nice “restful” prep when compared to the cut-and-dry DSM-IV memorization. One problem many encounter is “freezing up” during the impersonal, time-limited vignette exam – making it trying to “cough up” all the necessary diagnostic and treatment possibilities within allotted time. The focus on less-is-more in this book allowed me to read it several times and I was able to resolution many of similar vignette-correlated questions on what felt like an auto-pilot. Keep in mind that ABPN oral tests “bread-and-butter” of psychiatry, meaning that it is unlikely that a vignette is going to focus on controversial or arcane areas of the field (unlike SHELF, PRITE or written boards, where anything goes). Observably, it is very vital to do the vignettes listed on ABPN site and keep your differential as wide as possible. Can’t give it 5 stars because of factual errors mentioned by other reviewers.
